Metabolic / Endocrine Models

Streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetes is established in pigs within days and holds stable for months under insulin control, giving devices and therapies that need long-term follow-up a sufficient observation window. Porcine skin resembles human skin in epidermal and dermal thickness and in adnexal distribution, and — like human skin, and unlike rodent skin — lacks the panniculus carnosus: rodent wounds close largely by contraction, whereas porcine and human wounds heal by re-epithelialisation and granulation tissue. Diabetic wound-healing results therefore translate more directly. A single animal accommodates several test wounds and sensor sites at once, which suits accuracy and wear-duration validation for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM).

Experiment Types

  • Type 1 diabetes model induction and glucose monitoring
  • Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) accuracy validation
  • Diabetic wound healing assessment

Beyond the models

These are not disease models, but they are part of what we take on.

Veterinary and medical training

We also host veterinary and medical training programmes. Surgeons complete hands-on practice on pigs before performing a new procedure for the first time, which supports subsequent TFDA approval and reduces the risk of that first clinical use.
